BMW Key Replacement: Who Can Do It and What It Costs
Most BMW keys can be replaced by an independent auto locksmith, from older EWS and CAS cars to the FEM and BDC systems on recent models. Comfort Access keyless fobs need coding to the car. A replacement key cut and programmed costs £100 to £282 (WhoCanFixMyCar; StageMyCar), and dealer prices often run higher.
How have BMW keys changed?
BMW's key security sits in a module in the car that authorises each key. Older cars used EWS, the electronic immobiliser of the 1990s and early 2000s. Then came CAS, the Car Access System, across a long run of models. Newer cars moved the job to the FEM (Front Electronic Module) and then the BDC (Body Domain Controller). Alongside, the key grew from a blade with remote buttons to a smart fob with an emergency blade inside, and recent models offer a Digital Key in a phone app. Your model and year narrow down which system you have.
What is BMW Comfort Access?
Comfort Access is BMW's name for keyless entry and start. With the fob in a pocket or bag, you unlock by touching the door handle and start with the button. Not every BMW has it: it was an option on many models, so two cars of the same age can carry different keys. A Comfort Access fob costs more to replace than a basic remote, because the fob is more complex and must be coded to the car's module. If you are not sure whether your car has it, a dealer or locksmith can read the original build from the VIN.
Can an independent locksmith programme a BMW key?
Usually, yes. BMW is one of the makes UK auto locksmiths most often advertise, and specialists list work on EWS, CAS, FEM and BDC cars, including Comfort Access fobs. The hardest case is a newer FEM or BDC car with every key lost, which can mean taking a module out for bench work and takes longer. BMW was not among the brands named in the published UK SERMI lists this site found for the 1 April 2026 launch, so independent BMW work relies on the locksmith's own equipment. Ask which system your car has and whether they have done it before.
What should you bring?
A locksmith or dealer will want to see that the BMW is yours. The V5C registration document in your name and photo ID are the usual pair, and some ask for proof of address too. If you bought the car recently and the new V5C has not arrived, bring the purchase invoice and the green new keeper slip, the V5C/2, and mention it when you book. If a key was stolen rather than lost, report it and ask for the old key to be disabled when the new one is coded.
What does a BMW key cost?
Sourced figures here cover all makes, not BMW alone. A key cut and programmed costs £100 to £282: WhoCanFixMyCar's 2026 booking average sets the top, and StageMyCar's locksmith floor sets the bottom. Programming a key you already have averages £250 in WhoCanFixMyCar bookings. Comfort Access fobs and all-keys-lost jobs on newer cars tend to cost more than a basic remote key. StageMyCar, a lower-weight trade source, notes dealer prices are often higher than an independent's. Get the total in writing: key, coding, any module work and call-out.
Common questions
Can a locksmith programme a BMW Comfort Access key?
Many independent BMW specialists do. The fob must be coded to the car's CAS, FEM or BDC module. Give your registration so they can confirm the system before coming out.
I have lost all my BMW keys. Do I need a dealer?
Not necessarily. Independent specialists handle all-keys-lost on many BMWs, though newer FEM and BDC cars take longer and cost more. A dealer is the alternative if the locksmith cannot complete it.
Is a BMW Digital Key a replacement for a fob?
It works alongside a physical key on supported models and is set up through the BMW app. It does not remove the need for a working fob as a backup, so replace a lost fob anyway.
