Window lock repair
Window lock repairs are usually charged as labour, £65 to £85 an hour in daytime across the Master Locksmiths Association's 2026 list, Checkatrade and Bark, plus parts. On a uPVC window the fault is often the handle, the espagnolette mechanism or a worn hinge. Timber sash windows take their own locks and stops.
What this covers
Typical price. Window lock repairs are usually charged as labour, at £65 to £85 an hour in daytime across the MLA's 2026 list, Checkatrade and Bark, plus parts.
What the job covers
- Replacing a uPVC window handle that no longer locks
- Fitting a new espagnolette mechanism when a window will not close tight
- Fitting keyed locks or stops to a timber sash window
- Supplying keys for locking window handles when the originals are lost
- Replacing worn friction hinges so a window closes square
What is involved
Most UK windows are uPVC casements. Turning the handle drives an espagnolette (espag) mechanism in the edge of the opening sash, which throws locking cams into keeps on the frame. A handle that turns loosely, or a window that will not close tight, usually means a broken handle, a failed espag or a worn hinge. A locking handle can be replaced on its own, matched to the spindle length and screw centres; an espag is matched by its backset and length. Worn friction hinges let the window drop so the cams miss their keeps, and replacing them is often what makes the lock work again.
Timber sash windows have no lock built in. They usually rely on a fastener between the two sashes, which can be backed up with keyed sash locks or sash stops that let the window open a little for air and no further. On older windows the timber has to be sound enough to hold the screws.
Window keys are often shared across a make of handle, so replacing lost ones is usually straightforward. A locksmith can identify the handle and supply keys, or swap the handles for ones that all take the same key.
Window locks matter for insurance too. Many home policies ask for key-operated locks on ground floor and other accessible windows, so check the wording. In a room that relies on a window as a fire escape, that window should open easily from inside, and the key for a locking handle should be kept close by.
Misted panes, cracked glass and damaged frames are work for a window company or glazier; a locksmith handles the locks, handles, mechanisms and hinges.
Choosing someone for the job
Ask for the total before work starts, or the hourly rate and the parts, with VAT. Say what the window is (uPVC casement, tilt and turn, timber sash) and what it does wrong: the handle spins, it will not close tight, or the key is lost. A photo of the handle and of the mechanism in the edge of the sash helps the locksmith bring the right part. Ask whether the hinges need replacing at the same time, and whether new handles can all take one key. If your insurer asks for key-operated window locks, ask for what was fitted on the invoice.

Common questions
Can you replace a uPVC window handle?
Yes. Most locking uPVC window handles are held by two screws and a square spindle, and a replacement has to match the spindle length and screw centres. If the new handle still does not lock, the espagnolette mechanism or the hinges are probably at fault.
Why won't my window lock?
Usually because the window has dropped on worn hinges, so the locking cams miss their keeps, or because the espagnolette mechanism inside the sash has failed. A broken handle can cause the same symptom. A locksmith can tell which, and replace the part.
How can a sash window be made more secure?
With keyed sash locks or sash stops fitted alongside the existing fastener. Stops let the window open a little for air but no further. The timber has to be sound enough to hold the screws, so a locksmith checks the frame first.
Can I get a new key for my window locks?
Usually. Window keys are often shared across a make of handle, so a locksmith can identify the handle and supply a key, or fit new handles that all take the same one. Take a photo of the handle and any markings when you ask.
Do I need window locks for home insurance?
Many policies ask for key-operated locks on ground floor and other accessible windows. Check your policy wording, and keep an invoice showing what was fitted. In a room that relies on a window as a fire escape, keep the key close to it.
Does a locksmith repair double glazing?
A locksmith repairs the locks, handles, mechanisms and hinges on double glazed windows. A misted pane, a cracked sealed unit or a damaged frame is work for a window company or a glazier.
