Hyundai Key Replacement: Who Can Do It and What It Costs

Hyundai keys range from flip keys on the i10, i20 and i30 to smart keys on the Tucson, Kona and Ioniq models. Most can be cut and programmed by an independent auto locksmith. Hyundai was not among the brands named in published UK SERMI lists at launch. A key cut and programmed costs £100 to £282 (WhoCanFixMyCar; StageMyCar).

Which key does your Hyundai have?

Look at the key and at the dashboard. A key that folds out of a remote, or a fixed blade with buttons, is a transponder flip key, the norm on the i10, i20 and i30 for many years. If your Hyundai starts with a button and the fob never leaves your pocket, it has a smart key, common on the Tucson, Kona, Santa Fe and the Ioniq electric models. Smart keys hide a slim emergency blade. Some recent Hyundais also offer a digital key on a phone, depending on model and trim.

How do independent locksmiths handle Hyundai keys?

Hyundai flip keys are an everyday job for UK auto locksmiths: the blade is cut to the car's locks, and the transponder and remote are programmed through the diagnostic port. Smart keys for the Tucson and Kona are widely covered too. The newest models, and the electric Ioniq range in particular, can be ahead of some locksmiths' equipment, so check before booking and give the registration when you call. Because Kia and Hyundai share engineering, a locksmith who handles one usually handles the other.

Where does Hyundai stand on SERMI?

The published lists this site found for UK SERMI, which started on 1 April 2026, did not include Hyundai. Ford, Jaguar, Land Rover, Nissan and Toyota went first, and the Stellantis brands signed up before launch. Hyundai owners are not shut out: independents use their own tools for most models, as they did before SERMI existed. If your car is new and a locksmith says they cannot reach it, the Hyundai dealer is the alternative route, and its price is worth having for comparison anyway.

What to have ready on the day

The locksmith will check the V5C against your photo ID before starting. If the Hyundai is a company or lease car, the lease company is usually the registered keeper and will tell you how replacement keys are handled. Park somewhere the locksmith can work beside the car, and make sure the 12-volt battery is in good order. If the keys were taken in a burglary, report it, and ask for every missing key to be removed from the car so that none of them can start it again.

How much is a Hyundai key?

No Hyundai-only figure appears in the sourced rates. The all-makes range for a key cut and programmed is £100 to £282, the bottom from StageMyCar's locksmith figure and the top from WhoCanFixMyCar's average across 2026 bookings. When you have the key and need only programming, WhoCanFixMyCar's average is £250. An i10 flip key tends to cost less than a smart key for an Ioniq or Tucson. A dealer may quote more: StageMyCar says that is common, though it carries less weight here.

Common questions

Can a locksmith programme a Hyundai smart key?

Yes, for most models, including the Tucson and Kona. For the newest cars and the Ioniq electric range, ask whether the locksmith's equipment covers your model and year before they travel.

My Hyundai flip key will not fold out. Can it be fixed?

Usually. Auto locksmiths replace flip mechanisms and cases, often keeping your existing transponder and circuit board so the car still recognises the key. Bring the key and the V5C.

Is Hyundai in UK SERMI?

Hyundai was not named in the published UK SERMI lists this site found. Independent locksmiths still programme most Hyundai keys with their own equipment, as they did before the scheme began.
