VW Key Replacement: Who Can Do It and What It Costs

Volkswagen flip keys and transponder keys are routine work for independent auto locksmiths. On newer MQB cars, from the Golf 7 onwards, key changes link to VW's online system, so ask before booking. A replacement key cut and programmed costs £100 to £282 (WhoCanFixMyCar; StageMyCar), and dealer prices often run higher.

What keys do Volkswagens use?

The key most VW owners know is the flip key: a folding blade in a remote housing, used on the Golf, Polo, Passat and many more for well over a decade. Inside sits a transponder that the immobiliser reads before the engine will run. Older cars had a plain key with a separate or built-in remote. Higher trims of newer models offer Keyless Access, VW's keyless entry and start, with a fob that stays in a pocket. Seat, Skoda and Audi share much of the same group technology, so a VW key may look familiar on a neighbour's Skoda.

Why are newer VWs harder?

Cars on VW's MQB platform, from the Golf 7 onward, use the group's fifth-generation immobiliser. According to PMM, a motor trade magazine, changes to that system need an online connection between the car and Volkswagen's central server, known as FAZIT. Specialist auto locksmiths with the right tools and access do add spare keys to many MQB cars, and some describe it as a short job done on site. All keys lost on a newer car, or a model their tools do not yet cover, can still mean a dealer. Older VWs from before MQB are straightforward for most independents.

Is Volkswagen in UK SERMI?

Volkswagen was not among the brands named in the published UK SERMI lists this site found. The first brands when the scheme went live on 1 April 2026 were Ford, Jaguar, Land Rover, Nissan and Toyota, with the Stellantis brands committing early as well. That does not stop independent locksmiths working on VWs, which they do in large numbers. It may change, so ask a locksmith how they reach VW key data for your model. If the answer is vague and your car is recent, ask whether they have programmed that exact model before, and what you pay if they cannot finish.

What do you need to show?

A VW key job starts with proof of ownership. Bring the V5C logbook showing you as keeper and a photo ID that matches it. If the car is on finance or a lease, the V5C may name the finance company; bring the agreement and ask the locksmith in advance what they will accept. Note the registration and the model year, and check whether the car has Keyless Access, because that decides which fob you need and changes the price. A working key, if you still have one, makes the job quicker.

What does a VW key cost?

There is no VW-specific figure in this site's sourced rates. Across makes, a replacement key cut and programmed costs £100 to £282 (WhoCanFixMyCar's 2026 booking average at the top, StageMyCar's locksmith floor at the bottom), and programming on its own averages £250 (WhoCanFixMyCar). A spare flip key for an older Golf or Polo is usually at the cheaper end; Keyless Access fobs and MQB all-keys-lost jobs cost more. StageMyCar reports that dealers often charge more than locksmiths, a point from a trade blog given lower weight here.

Common questions

Can a locksmith make a VW flip key?

Yes. Flip keys for the Golf, Polo and other VWs are routine for independent auto locksmiths, who cut the blade and programme the transponder and remote to the car.

Can a spare key be added to a Golf 7 or newer without a dealer?

Often, yes, by a specialist with tools for VW's MQB system, which needs an online link to VW's server. If all keys are lost, the dealer route is more likely. Ask with your registration.

Will a Skoda or Seat key work in my VW?

Group keys can look alike, but each one must be cut for your locks and programmed to your car. A locksmith may use a group blank; the programming is what makes it start the engine.
