Toyota Key Replacement: Who Can Do It and What It Costs

Toyota keys run from transponder keys on older Yaris and Aygo models to smart keys with push-button start across the hybrid range. Toyota was one of the first five brands in UK SERMI from 1 April 2026, and independent auto locksmiths cover most models. A key cut and programmed costs £100 to £282 (WhoCanFixMyCar; StageMyCar).

Which keys does Toyota use?

Older Toyotas use a cut blade with a transponder chip in the head, sometimes with remote buttons built in. Across the hybrid range, from the Yaris and C-HR to the RAV4 and Corolla, many cars use Toyota's smart key: you unlock by touching the door handle and start with a button, and a metal key slides out of the fob for emergencies. The first-generation Aygo was built alongside the Peugeot 107 and Citroën C1 in the Czech Republic, and the three cars share much of their hardware.

Can an independent auto locksmith programme a Toyota key?

Usually. Spare keys for Yaris, Auris, Aygo and Corolla models are common work, and smart keys for the hybrid range are covered by specialists with current equipment. Trade sources note that newer Toyota remote keys have no owner programming routine, so a professional must programme them. All keys lost on a newer smart-key car is the slower and dearer job. Ask the locksmith whether they have done your model and year, and what they will need from you on the day.

What does SERMI mean for Toyota?

Toyota went live in UK SERMI on day one, 1 April 2026, as one of five launch brands. The scheme is not a legal requirement for locksmiths, but manufacturers use it to decide who may reach their security data, and Toyota is among those using it. A business in the scheme is audited over a five-year term, including one unannounced visit. If a locksmith quoting for your Toyota claims SERMI status, asking to see the certificate is fair; this site has found no public register to check it against.

What should you bring?

Bring the V5C in your name and photo ID. Many Toyota hybrids are bought on finance or personal contract hire, and then the V5C may name the finance or leasing company, so contact them before booking. Have the registration to hand and check whether the car has a push-button start, which tells the locksmith to bring a smart key. If a key was stolen, quote the crime reference, and ask for that key to be removed from the car's memory so it can no longer start the engine.

What does a Toyota key cost?

Sourced figures here are not split by make. A key cut and programmed costs £100 to £282, from StageMyCar's locksmith floor to the WhoCanFixMyCar 2026 booking average, and programming alone averages £250 on WhoCanFixMyCar. A transponder key for an older Yaris or Aygo usually costs less than a hybrid smart key. StageMyCar, a trade blog with lower weight here, reports that dealers often charge more than independents. Ask for one price covering the key, programming and travel, and check whether an evening visit costs more.

Common questions

Can a locksmith replace a Toyota Yaris key?

Yes, for most Yaris models, both older transponder keys and newer smart keys. Toyota's place in UK SERMI also gives locksmiths in the scheme access to its key data for recent cars.

Is an Aygo key the same as a Peugeot 107 or Citroën C1 key?

The first-generation Aygo was built alongside the 107 and C1 and shares much hardware, but any key still has to be cut and programmed to your car. Give the locksmith your registration.

Why can't I programme a new Toyota remote myself?

Trade sources say newer Toyota remote keys have no owner programming routine, so a locksmith or dealer must programme them with diagnostic equipment. Keep a working key safe while you arrange it.
