Kia Key Replacement: Who Can Do It and What It Costs

Kia keys run from flip keys on the Picanto, Rio and Ceed to smart keys with push-button start on the Sportage, Niro and electric models. Independent auto locksmiths cover most of them. Kia was not among the brands named in published UK SERMI lists at launch. A key cut and programmed costs £100 to £282 (WhoCanFixMyCar; StageMyCar).

Which Kia key do you have?

Kia uses two broad families. Smaller and older models, such as the Picanto, Rio and earlier Ceed, mostly have a flip key or a fixed blade with a transponder and remote buttons. Higher trims and newer cars, including many Sportage and Niro models and the EV range, use a smart key: the car unlocks from a button or sensor on the handle and starts with a push button. A small blade inside the fob opens the driver's door if the fob battery runs out. Kia shares much of its engineering with Hyundai, its sister brand.

Can an independent auto locksmith replace a Kia key?

Mostly, yes. Kia flip keys and smart keys are standard work for UK auto locksmiths with current diagnostic equipment, and the Picanto is the Kia model named in the key searches measured for this site. Newer cars, particularly the electric models and those from the last few years, can require more recent software, so not every locksmith covers every model yet. Give the registration and ask whether they have programmed that model and year. If not, a Kia dealer is the fallback, and an older Kia is rarely a problem for an experienced auto locksmith.

What about SERMI and Kia?

UK SERMI went live on 1 April 2026 with Ford, Jaguar, Land Rover, Nissan and Toyota, and the Stellantis brands committed early. Kia did not appear in the published lists this site found. That has not stopped independents working on Kias, but it means there is no SERMI route to Kia's own data in those lists yet. More manufacturers are expected to join, so check again if your car is very new and a locksmith says they cannot reach it.

What do you need to bring?

Proof that the Kia is yours: the V5C and photo ID in the same name. Kia has offered long manufacturer warranties, so many owners still use the dealer for servicing; if yours is in warranty, ask the dealer what a replacement key costs as well, so you have two prices to compare. If the key was stolen, report it, and have the old key removed from the car's memory when the new one is programmed. Check the glovebox and the purchase paperwork for a forgotten spare before booking.

What does a Kia key cost?

No Kia-specific rate is in this site's sources. A replacement key cut and programmed costs £100 to £282 for any make (StageMyCar's figure for a locksmith at the bottom, WhoCanFixMyCar's 2026 booking average at the top). If the key exists and only needs programming, WhoCanFixMyCar's average is £250. A Picanto flip key usually sits lower than a smart key for a Sportage or an EV. StageMyCar, weighted lower as a trade blog, says dealer prices tend to be higher. Ask for the total, including call-out, before the locksmith sets off.

Common questions

Can a locksmith replace a Kia Picanto key?

Yes. Picanto flip and remote keys are routine for independent auto locksmiths, who cut the blade and programme the transponder to the car. Have the V5C and photo ID ready.

Are Kia and Hyundai keys the same?

They are sister brands and share a lot of technology, but a key has to be cut and programmed for your own car. A locksmith may use a similar blank for both; the programming is what makes it work.

Do I have to go to a Kia dealer for a smart key?

Not usually. Many independent auto locksmiths programme Kia smart keys. For the newest or electric models, ask first whether their equipment covers your car and year.
